The initial cause of the current recession (which may become a depression if President Obama doesn’t take the correct steps) wasn’t the burst in the speculative housing bubble, or the accumulation of consumer debt, but instead two major factors that the United States has seen before.

The United States economy is vastly different from what it was when it was initially founded. Washington has blamed the economic downturn on the faulty mortgage swaps. The housing bubble was only a small part of the cause for our financial collapse.
